Holkham Beach is regularly voted one of the finest beaches in England โ and for once, the hype is entirely justified. Miles of golden sand backed by ancient pinewoods, a vast National Nature Reserve, and a beach so wide that even on a August bank holiday you can find solitude. Here's how to make the most of it.
What Makes Holkham Special
Most famous beaches in England are famous despite their crowds. Holkham is different โ it's famous because of its sheer scale. The beach stretches for miles and the approach through the pinewood is genuinely theatrical: you walk through cool, dark trees and then suddenly emerge onto one of the widest, most open stretches of sand in Britain.
The beach sits within the Holkham National Nature Reserve, one of the largest in England. The pinewoods were planted in the 19th century to stabilise the dunes; the salt marshes to the east host some of the best wading bird populations on the Norfolk coast; and the beach itself is backed by dunes that offer shelter from even the fiercest north wind.
It was used as the beach scene in Shakespeare in Love (1998) โ you'll recognise it immediately if you've seen the film.
Getting There
By Car
The main car park is at the end of Lady Anne's Drive in Holkham village (postcode NR23 1RG), managed by the Holkham Estate. The walk from the car park to the beach through the pinewoods takes around 15โ20 minutes and is flat and easy. There is a second smaller car park at Burnham Overy Staithe to the west for those approaching from that direction.
โ ๏ธ Summer parking: The Lady Anne's Drive car park fills completely by 10am on sunny summer weekends. Arrive before 9am, or visit on a weekday. Alternatively, park in Wells-next-the-Sea (10 mins east by road) and walk along the beach or coastal path to Holkham โ adds a beautiful 2-mile walk each way.
By Bus
The Coasthopper bus stops in Holkham village, a short walk from the car park. It runs between Kings Lynn and Cromer and is a great option in summer when driving is stressful. Check coasthopper.co.uk for timetables.
By Bike
Holkham is excellent by bicycle. The North Norfolk Cycling Route passes through the estate, and you can lock bikes at the car park. Wells, Burnham Market and Burnham Overy are all lovely cycling destinations from Holkham.
The Best Walks from Holkham
Best Time to Visit
Holkham at dawn in autumn is one of the great free experiences in Norfolk. Arrive at first light โ the beach is completely empty, the light on the sand is extraordinary, and you'll often hear (and sometimes see) skeins of pink-footed geese flying in off the sea to roost inland. Bring a flask of tea.
Wildlife at Holkham
The Holkham National Nature Reserve is one of the most important wildlife sites on the Norfolk coast. Here's what to look for:
- Pink-footed geese โ thousands roost on the beach in winter, spectacular at dawn and dusk
- Marsh harriers โ hunt over the salt marshes year-round
- Little egrets โ common in the creeks east of the beach
- Oystercatchers, curlews and redshanks โ on the salt marshes
- Common seals โ haul out on the sandbanks at low tide
- Red deer โ on the Holkham Estate, sometimes visible from the coastal path
What to Bring
Nearby: Food & Drink
- The Victoria at Holkham โ the estate pub, excellent food, right by the car park. Book ahead in summer
- Wells-next-the-Sea โ 10 mins east, great fish and chips, good cafรฉs on the quay
- Burnham Market โ 10 mins west, Norfolk's most upmarket village, excellent delis and cafรฉs
- The Hero, Burnham Overy Staithe โ remote and wonderful pub with views over the creek
The beach cafรฉ at the end of Lady Anne's Drive is decent for hot drinks and simple food, but the Victoria pub at the car park end is far better and worth the slight extra cost. In summer, the queue for the beach cafรฉ can be extraordinary โ the pub rarely has a wait.
Final Thoughts
Holkham is one of those rare places that actually lives up to its reputation. The combination of pinewood, vast beach, salt marsh and wildlife reserve creates something genuinely special โ an experience that's different every season and in every light.
If you only visit one beach in Norfolk, make it this one. And go early.
